Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) has commissioned two boreholes estimated to benefit 6000 households in the arid and semi-arid areas in West Pokot County. According to KVDA Managing Director (MD) Sammy Naporos, one of the mandates is to promote water access among the arid and semi-arid communities due to recurrent drought experienced in the county where many people are facing a lot of severe and acute water shortage. He said the project will help in increasing the number of livestock in the border of Uganda and Kenya urging the pastoralists to take advantage of the Natira and Loktadel boreholes. Speaking during the handing over of the projects to the Department of Water and Natural Resources, Naporos specified that the boreholes will not only benefit households but also 30,000 livestock along the border of Uganda and Kenya thus a lot of increase in livestock is expected.
The Department of Health in Narok County has distributed 93 per cent of the Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN) to the registered households.
Speaking during a stakeholders meeting to review the net distribution exercise that was launched two weeks ago, the County Malaria Coordinator Patrick Njoka said 710, 817 nets were distributed out of the 760, 617 nets that had been delivered. Trans Mara West Sub County was ranked the best in households’ net distribution after it attained 99 per cent while Narok East Sub county lagged behind at 71 per cent. At the same time, 90 per cent of the households that had registered to receive the nets had been served during the net distribution exercise that was concluded last week.
The Kenya Red Cross Society has started a programme to assist irrigation farmers along the river Tana grow bamboo trees to stabilize river banks and restore degraded farmlands that were destroyed by floods early this year. During the March-April rains irrigation farmers along the vast river Tana in Garissa County incurred massive financial loses after their crops mostly horticultural were destroyed by raging floods.
The farmers were forced to abandon crops that were ready for harvesting when the floods submerged the farms rendering them inaccessible. According to Daudi Ahmed, the Kenya Red Cross Society Garissa branch coordinator the long-term programme is aimed at mitigating the effects of floods on irrigation farming that is among the sectors hardest hit by floods.

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has called on the students’ leadership of Kibabii University to champion peace and avoid violence in their roles. In a meeting with the newly elected student leaders on Wednesday in his office, Lusaka urged them to embrace alternative methods of conflict resolution both within the University and in their communities. Lusaka said that the student leadership often serves as a springboard to national leadership. He encouraged the young leaders to use their current positions wisely stating that history has proved that University student leaders have frequently risen to become national leaders.
Former National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) Chief Executive Officer, CPA Geoffrey Gitau Mwangi yesterday had a fruitful consultative meeting with representatives of members of Kisii community living in Nakuru County’s Nakuru West constituency. Mwangi who is is eying the Nakuru gubernatorial seat, come 2027 General Election highlighted his vision for the cosmopolitan county as they pledged to support his bid. “As I pursue the Nakuru County Governorship in 2027, I’m deeply committed to fostering unity and collaboration. Listening to the concerns of the Kisii people is so important to me, and I want to ensure that their voices play a significant role in shaping my vision for an inclusive Nakuru,” he said after the meeting. During the meeting, they explored practical ways to enhance economic opportunities, strengthen our cultural ties, and tackle the challenges our community faces. “I left our discussions feeling inspired and hopeful.
