Kirinyaga County Youth and Talent Development Stakeholders have conducted talent searches in the area, identifying many talents among the youth. However, the lack of proper scouting programmes has led to a waste of talents. The main activity is to nurture talents among people, whether youths or the elderly. The organisation plans to mobilise stakeholders by planning more talent searches in their villages and hopes to set up a Njuki-Ini ward talent development centre to prevent talents from going to waste.
Opinion leader Peter Kathanga believes that scouting talents should start at the grassroots to ensure that those with talents receive the necessary support to develop them. He has called for the establishment of a talent academy to ensure youth employment and prevent them from indulging in alcoholism and drug abuse.
Local musicians James Lezlez and Judy Mwikali have called for more interaction and support for other talents such as singing, acting, drawing, dancing, and modeling. They also appealed to NGOs to fund talent searches in remote areas and invite youth to use digital spaces for uploading content.
Tharaka Nithi County has started recovering public land that it lost to encroachers, leading to the demolition of five illegally occupied houses at the Chuka County Referral Hospital. The county Chief Officer for Lands and Housing, Mbae Karuku, stated that the notices served to the occupants had expired the previous day, and no property was destroyed as they had only complied with the notice and moved their valuables to safer grounds. The county government is currently in the process of recovering all public property in the hands of private individuals. The Chief Officer for Medical Services, Karani Riungu, stated that some of the occupants were people who had worked at the hospital years ago and continued to live in the houses even after retirement, while others had passed on but bequeathed the premises to their families. The County Governor, Muthomi Njuki, has warned that unscrupulous civil servants continue to occupy government residences even after leaving service and that anyone occupying such land should vacate before they are evicted.
The Catholic Church in Kenya has called for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, urging for no more bloodshed and the end of the unnecessary war. Archbishop Martin Musonda Kivuva emphasised the importance of repentance and restoring normalcy, stating that with God, everything is possible. He also decried the misinterpretation of the church’s stand on blessings for the LGBTQ, stating that the Vatican’s statement titled Fiducia Supplicans has led to concerns about the church’s stance on LGBTQ unions. The church maintains its stand on blessings for male and female marriage only but is open to reaching out to all, hoping that people can change their ways of living and return to God. He emphasised that the church’s work is to bring together those who have gone astray, bring them back on board, and ensure they taste salvation. The church’s position is that blessings cannot be done and conferred upon outside of what the Holy Scripture prescribes.
The boards of Gatunguru, Kiru, and Kanyenyaini Tea factories in Murang’a County have decided to increase the prices of green leaf from Sh21 to Sh25 per kilo to help farmers cope with the high cost of living. Zone Three Board member Chege Kirundi praised the move, stating that the previous price was insufficient compared to the increased cost of living, which has left many smallholder farmers struggling with loans. The new price will be reflected during December production payments. Chege emphasised that farmers are obliged to receive their payment as soon as possible after the sale. He also argued that the increase in price will prevent farmers from hawking their green leaf to private factories, as the move has caused the factories to operate below capacity. Gatunguru Tea Factory Chairman Mwangi Kaguma said the resolution was part of the tea sector’s reforms and aimed to address grower interests. However, the Gathambo Tea Factory Board wants the proposed increment of Sh4 per kilo to be channelled towards the end-of-year bonus.
Othaya Constituency Member of Parliament Wambugu Wainaina through his Wambugu Wainaina Foundation feted hundreds of his constituents from disadvantaged families during the Christmas holiday. The MP shared Christmas gifts with over 1,500 families, most of whom were drawn from the aged and those living with disabilitiea. At least 50 families from each of the 30 sub-locations received supplies from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Those who benefitted from the MP’s generosity thanked him for remembering them.
