Several families have been left homeless in Shauri Slums in Embu Town after fire gutted down their houses on Monday afternoon.
Although no one was reported injured during the 2 PM inferno, property of unknown value went up in flames after the raging flames spread fast and consumed the houses.
It took the intervention of neighbors and members of the public to put out the fire that was threatening to spread to other houses.
One of the affected tenants, Mercy Wanjiru, said she was called by a neighbor informing her of the incident. By the time she arrived, her house had already been engulfed in fire and nothing could be salvaged.
“Am appealing to the government to come to my aid to enable me to get my life back on track,” said the mother of four.
The locals accused the County Fire Department of slow response, saying the fire could have been contained if the response was quick.
The County Government of Trans Nzoia has outlined plans to ensure the completion of Masinde Muliro and Railway Markets in Kitale Town.
While meeting representatives from the Kenya Chamber of Commerce Trans Nzoia Chapter, Governor George Natembeya stressed the commitment of his government to provide a conducive environment for the business community in a bid to increase productivity.
He assured residents that once construction of the markets is completed, the allocation of the market stalls and space will be based on meritocracy.
Reports in a section of the social media had indicated that some cartels had already been allocated stalls at the two markets and were planning to lease out to traders once the construction process was completed.

The National Museum of Kenya (NMK) in collaboration with Pwani University has embarked on research and documentation of the slavery trade for preservation of history and academic learning.
Speaking to the media during the release of the slavery documentary at Mnarani Ruins in Kilifi, NMK Coast Regional Assistant Director Athman Hussein said indications are showing that the barbaric trade was carried out in Kenya but there is no adequate information and materials archived.
The research, which is supported by partners from Poland aims at collecting evidence of the trade and documenting the information in books, documentaries, and artifacts to revive its history for the next generations and learning by students and researchers.
Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County will be ready in three months to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), Governor Fernandez Barasa has assured.
The Governor said the ongoing renovation works at the stadium have been accelerated adding that there will be weekly inspections to ensure that the facility is ready by the end of July this year.
Speaking when he toured the venue to assess the progress, the Governor said pitch earthworks, carpeting, and drainage system is currently being undertaken.
