Embu County Commissioner Jack Obuo announced that 6,400 replacement National Identity Cards are ready for collection at Huduma Centre. The IDs were for residents who sought replacement between September and July last year. Obuo appealed to owners to collect them to continue accessing government services. The delay in processing and issuance was attributed to a printer breakdown, which has been resolved after procuring new printers. Obuo also asked those applying for fresh registration at National Registration Bureaus to follow-up with the offices.
He assured them of a speedy process as the Department of Registration of Persons increased its capacity. The production is currently proceeding smoothly, and applicants can receive their IDs within a month of registration.
Principal Secretary for the State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action Anne Wang’ombe says the government is promoting economic empowerment for women, youth, and persons with disabilities.The government, through the Women Enterprise Fund, the National Government Affirmative Action Fund, and the Anti-FGM Board, is driving initiatives to empower women and promote gender equality.
The Women Enterprise Fund provides financial support and capacity-building programs for women-owned businesses, while the National Government Affirmative Action Fund supports projects promoting women’s leadership and empowerment at the grassroots level. The Anti-FGM Board leads campaigns against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), raising awareness and supporting survivors through advocacy and healthcare services.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary (CS), Dr. Andrew Karanja, says Kenya plans to reduce rice imports by 50% in the next five years.
The government is now fast-tracking a food diversity approach to assist Kenyans in embracing more varieties of food and modern farming technology. The CS confirmed that every year, the government is spending more funds to import rice to feed the population as production remained low.
He said that every year, close to 800,000 metric tonnes are imported into the country, with our production standing at between 150,000 and 200,000 metric tonnes. This has continued to strain the government, as every year substantial resources have to be committed to bridge the gap. He noted that demand for rice was increasing following the population surge and the rapid urbanisation the country is experiencing, and the country has been undertaking research and capacity-building for the scientists to increase production.
Homa Bay County Woman Representative Joyce Bensouda Osogo has launched a registration programme for all the people living with disabilities (PWDs) in the county. Osogo said there was need for the government to employ an accurate modern scientific system of identifying and registering PWDs. She expressed concern that a high number of people with disabilities have not been registered because of the systemic challenges in capturing their data. The exercise was launched on Tuesday.
