The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) yesterday issued its nomination certificate to Mr. Tubi Mohamed Tubi as the party’s candidate for the Isiolo South parliamentary by-election scheduled for February 26, next year. The certificate was handed over at the party headquarters, Hustler Plaza in Nairobi, by party’s Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan who conveyed President William Ruto’s appreciation to Isiolo County leaders and local communities for building consensus around Tubi’s candidature and for their continued support of the party. Hassan said the President remains focused on uplifting the lives of Kenyans through targeted government programmes. The event was attended by Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo and other UDA leaders.
Kericho County residents are enduring biting cold and persistent rainfall, conditions that have disrupted daily routines but lifted hopes among farmers. The Kenya Meteorological Department says parts of the Rift Valley, including Kericho, are experiencing moderate to heavy showers accompanied by low temperatures. Farmers say the rains are timely for key activities such as tea, maize, beans, potatoes and dairy farming. Tea growers note that adequate moisture is likely to improve yields, while food crop farmers say the wet weather supports land preparation and early planting. Kenya Met has cautioned residents about possible localised flooding, slippery roads and fog as the rains continue.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has hinted at a joint political initiative with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya and other senior Western leaders to strengthen the region’s influence nationally. Speaking on Monday while leading leaders to condole with the family of former Likuyani MP Dr. Enoch Wamalwa Kibunguchy, Wetangula said leaders had agreed to unite ahead of the 2027 General Election. He said unity among leaders would translate into a stronger community voice and greater bargaining power. Wetangula also cited development projects by the Ruto administration in Western Kenya and urged residents to support the government’s agenda.
Kisumu County has begun arrangements to repatriate the body of former JOOTRH CEO Dr. George Rae from South Korea, pending settlement of hospital bills amounting to Sh16.7 million. The county said it will also facilitate travel for one family member and is mobilising resources with partners and well-wishers to clear the bill. Dr. Rae died on Saturday while undergoing treatment during an official tour. He served as JOOTRH CEO from 2020 to 2024 and later as Head of Partnerships and Resource Mobilisation. Leaders and health workers have praised him as a transformative leader who strengthened healthcare systems and championed sickle cell care.
Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni says the Ministry of Health has adopted a whole-of-government approach to tackle drug and substance abuse in schools, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, with joint interventions set to begin next week. She urged teachers and school administrators to remain vigilant and closely monitor items brought to school by learners, noting that traffickers are disguising drugs as legal consumer products using sweeteners and deceptive packaging. Schools have been directed to carry out impromptu inspections of classrooms, dormitories and common areas. Muthoni warned that without urgent, coordinated action, children’s futures and community safety would be at serious risk.
Government reforms to streamline fisherman licensing through Beach Management Units have boosted fish stocks in Lake Victoria. Migori County CECM Lucas Mosenda said the measures reduced the number of fishermen from 57,137 in 2023/2024 to about 44,200 by June 2025, helping curb illegal fishing and protect breeding areas. Fisheries statistics show fish harvests rose to about 115,000 metric tonnes by March 2025, up from 97,500 metric tonnes between 2022 and 2024, with about 10,000 metric tonnes from cage farming. The government is also promoting fish ponds on small farms by supplying fingerlings, feed and fertilisers to reduce pressure on the lake.
