As drought continue to bite various parts of the country, Nyeri County has not been left behind.
Thousands of individuals and livestock have severely been affected, more so in the semi-arid Kieni constituency.
As part of dealing with the crisis, area Governor Mutahi Kahiga over the weekend commissioned the Nyeri County Famine Relief Coordination Committee which will come out with proposals on how to address the menace.
The committee will be receiving all food aid from government and other partners, oversee targets and distribute and document all drought interventions for accountability and audit purposes.

The committee will include representation from the County Government relevant departments of Agriculture, Health, Social Services, and Education, the County Commissioner’s office, the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Nyeri Business Community, Religious Leaders, Nyeri County Assembly and the National Drought Management Authority County Coordinator.
Other stakeholders will be co-opted where necessary. The organizations is expected to put up mitigation measures to ensure that the situation is addressed.
The committee through the coordination of the Agriculture CEC James Wachihi is expected to report back to the Governor and the County Commissioner on a bi-weekly basis.
Nyeri is among the 21 counties that have been heavily affected by the ongoing drought.
The situation has continued to worsen over the last few months.
The number of people in dire need of humanitarian assistance in the county has risen to 131,000 with the worst hit sub counties being Kieni East and Kieni West in need of relief support.
According to a report from the National Drought Management Authority, the county is now in an alert phase with both human food and pasture deficiency.
“I want to thank the National Government for the measures they have put in place. We received 520 bags of rice, and 720 bags of beans. This food has already been distributed in Kieni Constituency. I have been made aware that another consignment is on the way. We will on the onset set aside Sh11 million to purchase food for the vulnerable. So far, we have distributed some 400 bags of potato seed, and 9,000 kilograms of bean seed as part of our medium term measures,” Governor Kahiga added.
The Governor re-affirmed the commitment of his government to spare no effort in safeguarding lives as his administration continues to seek long term solutions to the issue of recurring drought.
He therefore called upon all friends of good will, to join them in supporting needy brothers and sisters in the county.
Donations can be in kind or financial.
Others present during the meeting were CECs James Wachihi (Agriculture), Esther Ndung’u (Gender), Robert Thuo (Finance), Nyeri KNCCI chapter officials led by Chairman Ibrahim Ndegwa and CEO Martin Ndirangu, Head of Service Delivery Unit Dr. Nyoike Wamwea, Chief of Staff Paul Wambugu, Gatarakwa MCA Clement Warutere, Nyeri Central DCC Joseph Mwangi, among others.
