The Committee on Implementation and the Committee on Water and Sanitation Services held a joint consultative meeting with the CEC Water and Sanitation Mr. Fredrick Kinyua, the Chief Officer Mr. Benard Kiama, officers from the Department and Managing Directors from various Water Companies in Nyeri County to deliberate on the increased water tariffs.
In the Wednesday meeting co-chaired by MCAs Kiruga Thuku (Chinga Ward) and Stephen Kigotho (Gikondi Ward) the members sought to find out the measures that have been so far taken to review downwards the increased water tarrifs.
This follows numerous complaints by water consumers under the jurisdiction of Othaya Mukurwe-ini Water Services Company, Tetu Aberdares Water and Sanitation Company, Narumoru Water and Sanitation Company and Mathira Water and Sanitation Company.
During the meeting, the members put to task the Managing Directors of the aforementioned companies to explain the efforts made and the measures put in place so far to resolve the challenge noting the numerous uproar by the water consumers from Mathira, Mukurwe-ini, Tetu, Othaya and Narumoru areas.
The members want the Department in charge of Water Services to liaise with Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) and other relevant bodies to urgently review downwards the water tariffs and charge a standardized tarrif of not more than KSh53 per unit so as to cushion the residents from further being subjected to exorbitant water charges noting that the country is facing hard economic times.
Those who attendee the meeting included; Sabastian Theuri (Wamagana) David Kabatha (Iria-ini-Mathira) Erastus Karanja (Ruguru), Jackson Kabingu (Magutu), Patrick Muriuki (Kabaru) Cyrus Kibiru (Mukurwe-ini Central) Patrick Kanyi (Thegu River), Muriithi Ndagita (Kirimukuyu), Wilfred Wambari (Iria-ini- Othaya), Gibson Wahinya (Dedan Kimathi), Atanasio Kabaire (Mukurwe-ini West), Eunice Wagaki (Karima), Simon Mbogo (Rware) Julius Kamiri (Konyu Ward), Johnstone Kamau (Mugunda), Fidelis Ndiritu (nominated) and Patrick Karanja (nominated).
Others wer the Managing Directors; OMWASCO Moses Munyi, MAWASCO David Kamitu, TEWASCO Simon Wanjau, NARUWASCO Ms. Gladys Njeri as well as other senior officials.
