The art of making detailed graphite pencil drawings get a good exhibition when practised by Peter Thaithi, a form three students at Githunguri Technical and secondary school.
The self-taught artist never attempts to repress the imperfections of human nature in his creations and hence, his pencil drawing beautifully shows the perfection of imperfection of life.
Therefore, Thaithi is the equivalent of Giacamo Butattin an Italian artist, who believes that reality is beauty in itself.
It’s a surprise how, a self-taught man, makes hyperrealistic drawings that are more than striking by using a pencil only.
“Every single compositional element emerges in the fullness of its volume, positioning itself in the perspective profundity that makes the consistency of the material is made tangible,” Peter Thaithi.
At school, Thaithi applies his ability by drawing teachers and fellow students to what everyone says are a real talent that is worth nurturing. Beyond this, he has drawn some key international figures, who include Alvaro Antonio Morte_who is popular for playing the role of The Professor(Sergio Marquina) in the famous Netflix Spanish tv series Money Heist (La Casa De Papel).

Today, he is one of the best pencil artists in Kenya, with his drawing having its own abstraction of reality. His hyper-realistic drawings are generally based on photographs, stills, videos etc. With the idea to go beyond the photograph, he creates subtler and virtual images. He has expertise in making meticulously detailed drawings, thereby creating an illusion of a new reality not seen in the original subject, which is mainly people but also includes cartoons.
Owing to his obsession with the detail of the subject, he takes nearly two to four days to finalize his drawing. But, the end results are worth it. He is quite active on social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram as Peter Thaithi. Where he regularly shares his pencil drawing and works on progress.
He believes that without a sufficient emphasis on art in the mainstream, many young people, without prior knowledge and support, will not discover their artistic interest and aptitude. He, therefore, devotes himself to his teachers and parents for their incessant support of his talent.
He proposes that the government should try to leverage talents and skills, concluding that they are key to building a sustainable art future. This lies in making young people a priority today, in education, and all other areas of everyday life. He points out that they are the leading choreographers, directors, painters, sculptors and composers of tomorrow that will come all too soon. They have the power to build the future, and they ought to be taken seriously.
