Police Officers Equipped with Key Skills as GBV Case Management Training Concludes

The Gender Violence Recovery Centre (GVRC), in collaboration with the National Police Leadership Academy (NPLA),and the Embassy of Denmark, celebrated the achievements of 360 officers who underwent specialized training to strengthen investigations, improve survivor support, and ensure justice for GBV victims, at the NPLA headquarters, in Nairobi.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Parliamentary Affairs Aurelia Rono, representing   PS for Gender and Affirmative Action, Anne wang’ombe, noted that this program strengthens the national response to GBV and enhances the capacity of our police service.

“It strengthens our national response to GBV and so we remain committed to working with the State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action and all other stakeholders to strengthen legal frameworks that protect survivors. Our 360 police officers from 21 counties were trained to effectively manage GBV cases, provide survivor-centered support, and connect survivors to safe shelters,” she explained.

The Deputy Inspector General, Kenya Police Service Eliud Lagat, highlighted that they  want to see a working good relationship between the  public and the police.

“All we want to see is a good relationship between our officers and the public,  and i can promise we are working seriously on it. One of the areas that we are tracing, is culture change, capacity building and in the fullness of time you will see us having a good time with the members of the public and moving towards a crime free society, they  will probably do much better in how they engage with  victims, how they do the investigation, it’s an all inclusive program,” he said.

Survivor support organizations, legal experts, and gender rights advocates also participated in the training, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to tackling GBV cases. Officers were introduced to best practices from global GBV management frameworks, with practical case studies and scenario-based learning exercises.

“We have our protocols, we have our SOPs, how we collect the evidence, how we come up with the treatment protocols, the psychosocial support of the medical side, and then how this  links to the criminal justice system into the judiciary. So there are challenges and this is what we’re addressing through training, so  that that whole chain of custody of evidence and how the survivors are treated from the community to the healthcare facility to the police,” said Dr. Thenya, CEO Nairobi Women’s  Hospital.

With the conclusion of this program, they  reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the justice system’s response to GBV, urging continued collaboration between law enforcement, civil society, and the judiciary to create a safer environment for all Kenyans.

The training comes at a time, when Kenya grapples with increasing cases of femicide and GBV. The officers, drawn from various parts of the country, were equipped with essential skills in GBV case management, including trauma-informed response, evidence collection, and legal frameworks guiding GBV investigations. The initiative seeks to foster a more survivor-centered approach in police responses to GBV incidents.

Moving forward, the trained officers are expected to serve as change agents within their respective stations, advocating for survivor-friendly reporting processes and leading efforts to streamline GBV case investigations.
