Politicians should desist from holding rallies near schools as exams approach

This week, most of schools have been closing to pave way for national examination for the candidates that registered for the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). They are expected to close for nearly two months. This comes when the electioneering fever seems to have gained momentum across the country. Campaigns have started, and it seems they will be in full swing even before the official date. In most cases during the rallies, the campaigners don’t follow the prescribed norms concerning the decibel unit restrictions.
Typically, vehicles move in all corners of the streets and on all roads carrying loudspeakers that broadcast at very great volume. Name of the candidate, promises of the candidates, party name, and party symbol keep on being repeated over and over. The combination of all these leads to severe noise pollution and causes great disturbances to the tranquility and peace of the general public. Therefore, careless use of loudspeakers and mounting other public address systems near schools should not be tolerated. Such kinds of rackets cannot let the students concentrate on their exams. They can disturb students’ calmness and concentration.
We all agree that election candidates have the right to sell their agenda to the public through different means, such as the use of loudspeakers. However, they need to understand that playing loud music and using loudspeakers near examination centers can negatively impact the students, whereby every minute for them is essential during exams. From this, politicians should therefore be urged to be more sensitive and avoid holding rallies and preventing election vehicles around schools. This is an important time for the students to brush up on all they have been studying; hence they need an eco-friendly environment free from noise and disturbances. The government should, therefore, keep a check on who will be holding rallies near schools and deal with them accordingly to ensure that the examinations run smoothly.
