President Names New AG And Regional Community Nominees

Beatrice Askul Moe nominated as the Cabinet Secretary for East Africa Community Affairs

President William Ruto nominated Dorcas Agik Oduor to the position of Attorney General (AG) on Tuesday, July 30.

Her nomination comes after former Cabinet Secretary previously nominated after the president dissolved his entire cabinet and the AG, declined the offer and nominated to the ministry of tourism and wildlife.

In a press statement released by the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, Ruto said the senior counsel is fit for the position following her vast experience in the field of law and justice and service as public servant.

The AG Nominee is a graduate of bachelors of Law Degree from the University of Nairobi and a post graduate diploma in law from the Kenya School of law, with over 30 years experience in public service.

“In her long and distinguished career as a jurist who has contributed immensely to the development of law in Kenya through litigation, draughtsman and legal advisories, senior counsel Oduor has demonstrated an unimpeachable integrity, impressive professional competence and steadfast commitment to the rule of law,” Ruto stated.

If the National Assembly approves her nomination, senior counsel Oduor will serve as the first ever AG in the country since independence. The position was being held by Justin Muturi who has been nominated to the ministry of public service and human capital development.

Oduor is the current secretary of public prosecutions in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). Before advancing her career at the office of the ODPP, she served as the Deputy Chief State Counsel and State Counsel at the office of the AG.

According to the constitution of Kenya Article 156, the AG is the legal adviser of the government, as well as represents the government in court proceedings and shall also perform any other function delegated to them by the president or act of parliament.

Additionally, Orange Democratic Movement party National Election Committee Board member Beatrice Askul Moe has been nominated as the Cabinet Secretary for East Africa Community Affairs (EAC) and Regional Development.
