The Nyeri National Polytechnic has emerged as a trailblazer in implementing the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) initiative, a transformative program designed to bridge the gap between informal skills acquisition and formal certification. This initiative is part of Kenya’s broader efforts to harmonize education and training under the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF).
Recognition of Prior Learning is a process that identifies, assesses, and certifies skills, knowledge, and competencies acquired outside formal education systems. These may include work experience, informal training, or community activities. The RPL framework allows individuals to gain formal qualifications that enhance their employability, mobility, and lifelong learning opportunities.
Nyeri National Polytechnic has been accredited by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) as a Qualification Awarding Institution (QAI). This accreditation positions the polytechnic as a leader in implementing RPL programs. The Polytechnic has 39 curricula focusing specifically on RPL, enabling individuals with technical skills but no formal certification to gain recognition. So far, the Polytechnic has assessed a total of 427 candidates. 132 candidates graduated during the 22nd March 2024, RPL policy framework launch at KICC, Nairobi. Among the graduates, 34 Cosmetology level 6 graduates have secured employment with the Public Service Commission and 68 firefighters have been employed by different County governments in the disaster management department.
RPL Process
At Nyeri National Polytechnic, the RPL process involves the following.
- Self-Assessment: Candidates identify their competencies relative to specific qualifications.
- Documentation: Evidence such as portfolios, work samples, or testimonials is compiled.
- Evaluation: Trained assessors validate the evidence against qualification standards.
- Certification: Successful candidates receive formal recognition of their skills.
