Kenya experienced heavy rainfall in March, April, and May, causing significant damage to the country.
Experts believe that disaster preparedness is crucial for mitigating future disasters and minimising the loss of lives and property.
The Kenya Meteorological Department predicts that most parts of the country will receive average rainfall in July, and August, providing relief for flood-prone areas.
Kihoto estate, a slum on Lake Naivasha, has been affected by flooding multiple times, with over 5,000 people displaced from their homes.
In 2020, the estate was also affected by rising water levels due to climate change, exposing residents to waterborne diseases and another potential disaster.
Proposals are being presented to address the issue of flooding, including the relocation of affected people.
Water levels are gradually reducing, but the displaced residents are still not returning to their homes.
Learning institutions were also disrupted, with the only public primary school overrun by floods, disrupting the learning calendar of many school-going children.
Human-wildlife conflicts have escalated in the area due to rising water levels, forcing hippos and buffaloes to invade human settlements and adjacent flower farms, posing a security hazard to locals.
Lake View Member of County Assembly (MCA) Alex Mbugua emphasises the National and County governments’s commitment to ensuring families are resettled.
In March, April, and May, over 300 people were killed by floods in 33 counties, causing over 200,000 families to be displaced and tens of others to be missing.
The government is working on rehabilitating damaged infrastructure in affected schools through the Ministry of Education and the National Government-Constituency Development Fund.
In the Maai-Mahiu area of Naivasha, victims of the floods continue to grapple with the aftermath of the disaster.
