Embu County scrap metal dealers have been granted a seven-day amnesty to surrender any vandalised public infrastructure they possess.
The decision was reached during a consultative meeting between dealers, the County Security Team, the County Government, and the Scrap Metal Council.
The move will pave the way for fresh vetting and licensing after the County Government banned the sale of scrap metal a month ago to contain the rise in cases of vandalism.
The ban will remain in force until traders are vetted afresh, and new applicants will be allowed to participate in the exercise.
The county loses over five million shillings annually from vandalism of advertising billboards and signage, and around three million shillings every month from stolen meters, gate valves, and pipes.
County Commissioner Jack Obuo said they have apprehended several culprits since the crackdown on vandals last year.
