Senate Committee on Health meets City and Mama Lucy hospital officials over deaths

- He however told the committee that immediately he took over as the Nairobi Governor, he put in place measures to address challenges affecting the health sector promising to work closely with the Senate to stabilize service delivery to Nairobi people.
- He appealed to the committee to support the county by considering increasing the allocation of funds to the County to help deal with the challenges in the health sector.
The Senate Committee on Health, Chaired by Jackson Mandago yesterday met with Nairobi County officials and Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital personnel over recent mysterious deaths in the facility.
The committee met the governor virtually but other county and hospital officials attended it physically.
It was convened so that they can shed light on the unfortunate demise of the late Maureen Anyango shortly after a caesarian delivery and the demise of the late Edward Otieno who succumbed to injuries sustained in a road accident.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja says his administration has put in place measures to improve provision of health services in the County.
Sakaja admitted to the Health Committee that health facilities in Nairobi County face myriad challenges among them financial constraints, inadequate human resource, lack of medical facilities something he said has for a long time affected service delivery in the County.
He however told the committee that immediately he took over as the Nairobi Governor, he put in place measures to address challenges affecting the health sector promising to work closely with the Senate to stabilize service delivery to Nairobi people.
He appealed to the committee to support the county by considering increasing the allocation of funds to the County to help deal with the challenges in the health sector.
The governor further notified the committee that his administration has already implemented payment of stipends to Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) commending them for their exemplary work in the health sector.
On the unfortunate demise of Maureen Anyango, Sakaja regretted the occurrence revealing that he already visited the hospital following the incident where he learned of several challenges that he promised to address in due course.
He assured the committee that his administration will not entertain incompetence from any employee when it comes to service delivery to the people of Nairobi.
The Senate committee members expressed their dissatisfaction with how the County and the Hospital gave their accounts in relation to the matter.
The Senators called upon the Governor and his team to ensure that things in the sector work in a smooth manner and seek for help whenever they are completely cornered.
The Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Members of Parliament Benjamin Gathiru (Embakasi Central), Mark Mwenje (Embakasi East) expressed their mercy on what they said to be a sorry state of health affairs in the County appealing to the hospital to rise to the occasion and serve Nairobi people as required by the Constitution.
Despite the hospital personnel spirited explanation touching on the unfortunate deaths, members who attended the Committee chaired by Mandago called upon the Nairobi County Administration and the hospital to address their shortcomings and completely fix the mess in the sector.
During the meeting, the committee resolved to invite for the second time the county officials and the hospital employees who appeared before it plus others who were not available.
Other members present during the meeting included Vice Chair Mariam Omar Sheikh, Hamida Kibwana, Okong`o Mogeni, Joseph Nyutu, Ledama Olekina.

Members of National Assembly, Benjamin Gathiru (Embakasi Central), Mark Mwenje (Embakasi East) attended the meeting as friends of the Committee.
