Property worth millions of shilling were reduce to ashes early yesterday in a fire incident at Waka area in the outskirt of Nyeri town, along Nyeri-Nairobi highway.
The fire whose source was not immediately established destroyed business and residential premises.
Despite bragging of being the best in handling fire incidents in the area, the county fire engine, based less than two kilometres away proved to be of no help.
Angry area residents pelted the fire engines and crew with stones when they realized that they were of no help.
Later, the Fire and Rescue department claimed that the locals accused them falsely saying they were out to contain the fire but their efforts were thwarted by lack of water.
After the incident, local leaders, led by businessman and gubernatorial aspirant Dr Thuo Mathenge visited the affected families where he condemned the county government of failing the residents.
Addressing the affected families as well those in the neighbourhood, Dr Mathenge said once he takes over the running of the county after the August 9th General Election, he will streamline various departments, among them the Fire and Rescue department which are crucial and offer essential services to the residents.
“I highly condemn the fact that the fire extinguisher didn’t have water to put out fire that consumed properties worth hundreds of thousands. When am Governor I will ensure that emergency services will always be ready and set to help those in such incidents like fire,” he said as he assisted the affected with basic necessities.
