Smallholder farmers in Tharaka Nithi County have received a major boost in their agricultural endeavors following the distribution of modern farming equipment aimed at enhancing productivity and sustainability.
In collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP), the Tharaka Nithi County Government has provided farmer groups across the county with an array of essential tools, including motorbikes, computers, digital platform weighing scales and digital hanging weighing scales.
The other equipment are printers, aflatoxin testing kits, props for cereal sampling, stitching machines, plastic pallets, fireproof steel safe boxes, fire extinguishers, tarpaulins, and metal cabinets.
These resources are expected to modernize farming operations and improve efficiency within the agricultural sector.

The distribution exercise was led by Deputy Governor Nyaga Muisrael, alongside WFP official Njeru, Tharaka Nithi County Agriculture Executive Njue Njagi, and Chief Officer Kimathi Njeru.
During the event, the leaders emphasized the importance of utilizing the equipment responsibly to maximize the benefits for all group members.
“I urge the beneficiaries, especially the group leaders, to ensure the equipment is used for the benefit of all members and not for personal gain,” stated WFP official Njeru. The officials also warned against selling, misusing, or damaging the equipment, noting that it remains the property of the government.
Deputy Governor Muisrael commended Governor Muthomi Njuki for his continued support of agriculture in the county. He highlighted several initiatives aimed at improving food security, including the distribution of free certified seeds.
“Governor Njuki has also established the Itugururu Agricultural Training Institute, which will play a critical role in equipping farmers with modern techniques for crop farming and livestock keeping,” said Muisrael.
Farmers from Tharaka, Maara, and Chuka/Igambang’ombe constituencies expressed their gratitude for the program, noting that the equipment would significantly boost their farming efforts.
“This is exactly what we need to elevate our farming to the next level. We appreciate Governor Njuki and the partners for their generous support,” said Joel Kimathi, a farmer from Nkondi Ward in Tharaka Constituency.
Ms. Lucy Mwende from Muthambi in Maara Constituency also praised the initiative, emphasizing how the motorbike would enable their officials to visit farms more efficiently while the donated computer would help keep accurate records.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to empower smallholder farmers, enhance food security, and reduce poverty in Tharaka Nithi County.
With improved access to modern equipment and resources, local farmers are expected to contribute more significantly to the county’s agricultural output and overall economic growth.
