Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria announced plans to increase liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consumption from 6.5 kilogrammes to 15 kilogrammes per capita in the next three years.
In the last decade, LPG consumption has doubled, with the number of people using it as a primary cooking fuel increasing by close to 10 million.
The Kenya energy strategy aims to transition the country into a clean energy hub by helping 50% of the population migrate to LPG as a clean cooking solution.
The government is committed to increasing LPG consumption using various incentives, including subsidised 6-kg cylinders for low-income households.
Kuria emphasised the need to transition to LPG as a cheaper and greener cooking solution, ensuring employment creation.
He stressed the need for collective efforts by both public and private sector players in developing robust strategies and creating awareness of the benefits of LPG.
