Tharaka Nithi County has taken a major leap toward strengthening healthcare service delivery and building a skilled health workforce through a series of strategic partnerships with leading academic and training institutions.
Under the leadership of the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Public Health, Medical Services & ICT, Dr. Gichuyia Nthuraku M’Riara, the county has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with several key institutions to facilitate the placement of students in county health facilities for industrial attachment and clinical training.
The institutions involved in this milestone collaboration include Kenyatta University, Karatina University, Kenya Methodist University (KeMU), Clive Irvine College of Health Sciences (CICHS), Chogoria PCEA Rubate School of Nursing, KMTC Isiolo, and FIELD Technologies.
The partnership represents a significant boost not only for hands-on clinical training but also for improved healthcare service delivery and the development of a future-ready health workforce.
Through this agreement, students pursuing medical and health-related courses will now gain valuable experience in well-equipped health facilities spread across Tharaka Nithi County.
Karatina University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Linus M. Gitonga, expressed strong support for the collaboration, noting its positive impact on both student learning and local health services.
“This is a big step toward supporting students and also boosting healthcare services in this county. We are grateful for this partnership and believe the MoU will be implemented effectively,” said Prof. Gitonga.
He further commended Governor Muthomi Njuki and the county leadership for building a health system that has gained the trust of academic institutions.
“We’re proud to see Tharaka Nithi emerge as a hub for clinical training. This shows how much the county has grown in capacity and service delivery. At Karatina University, we are also looking to expand our programs in health sciences to complement such partnerships,” he added.
Dr. Nthuraku emphasized the importance of continued collaboration among healthcare stakeholders, pointing to the transformative role of devolution in improving access to quality healthcare, especially in rural counties.
“Healthcare services have developed in a big way over the years, especially in rural areas, thanks to devolution. We must now build on this momentum through partnerships like this one,” he said.
County Secretary Alex Muratha reassured the partner institutions of the county government’s commitment to sustained cooperation across various sectors.
“On behalf of Tharaka Nithi County Government, I want to sincerely appreciate this partnership. As a government, we are keen on engaging with stakeholders across departments to better the lives of our people and contribute meaningfully to national development,” said Mr. Muratha.
Already, several institutions have expressed confidence in Tharaka Nithi’s health facilities and have begun sending students for clinical rotations and industrial attachment. County hospitals and health centers, including Chuka County Referral Hospital and Marimanti Sub-County Hospital, are among the preferred sites for training.
This initiative is part of a broader vision to transform Tharaka Nithi into a model county for health sector development, where learning, service delivery, and innovation go hand in hand.
With continuous investment in healthcare infrastructure and human capital, the county is positioning itself as a regional leader in accessible, quality healthcare.
As the partnership takes root, residents can expect not only enhanced services but also a new generation of healthcare professionals trained in real-world environments—right at the heart of their community.
