President Dr William Ruto awards Tharaka University lecturer Mr Kevin Tuei for mentoring Kenya's Grand Prize-winning team at the Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals in China.

Tharaka University’s Director of Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL), Kevin Tuei has been honored by President William Samoei Ruto for his outstanding role in mentoring Kenya’s Grand Prize-winning team at the prestigious Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals held in Shenzhen, China.
Mr. Tuei, accompanied by the University’s Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, joined Team Kenya during a ceremony at State House, Nairobi in which President Ruto recognized the country’s exceptional performance on the global ICT stage after Kenya emerged as the Overall Grand Prize winner for the first time in the competition’s history.
During the ceremony, President Ruto also commended Tharaka University under the leadership of Prof. Muriungi for its impressive growth and exemplary management despite being one of Kenya’s youngest public universities.
He noted that the institution has distinguished itself through prudent management, accountability in the utilization of public resources, and its commitment to producing highly skilled graduates who are making a significant impact in the job market.
“Tharaka University demonstrates that strong leadership, accountability and a commitment to excellence can enable even a young institution to compete with the very best,” President Ruto said as he applauded the university’s achievements.
Mr. Tuei played a central role in mentoring the victorious Cloud Track Team, guiding the students to outperform competitors from leading universities across the world. The historic victory highlights Kenya’s growing strength in digital innovation and underscores the value of mentorship, research, and investment in ICT skills.
Speaking after the recognition, Prof. Muriungi congratulated Mr. Tuei and Team Kenya for bringing honor to both the university and the nation.
“This recognition belongs not only to Mr. Tuei and the students but also to the entire Tharaka University fraternity that continues to believe in excellence, innovation and transformative education. We remain committed to nurturing globally competitive graduates through quality teaching, research, innovation and strategic partnerships,” Prof. Muriungi said.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that the latest achievement reflects the university’s deliberate investment in digital learning, research, and industry collaborations that prepare graduates for the evolving global workforce.
