It concerns that University and College love relationships are becoming rampant and as a basic requirement. Without closing eyes that the students are adults, close awareness and advice is needed. Cases of murder are being reported involving students causing unfortunate setbacks. The freedom and lack of monitoring gives them way to indulge in this.
The moment a form four candidate joins the institutions is innocent until they recognize the existing groups. Indeed you can learn a character and a behaviour is developed. The easy first years drop into relationships with the other years is concerning. We have realized this is prompted by exposure and the freedom. Not only these relaxes them from persuing their courses but also exposes them to uncertainties.
There are instances students are living together as couples without the knowledge of their parents. But parents pay rent knowing their child stays alone. We approached a student; Benard says they were trying to explore the dynamics of love! This is brought about by peer pressure from fellow students, online love trends and immoral individuals.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health HIV transmission is high among youths of age 15 to 24 who majority are studying in universities and colleges. The insinuation from fellow students’ pressures others for instance when having random group chats and sees you as innocent afterwards they try to mock you. Maybe because of lacking a principled upbringing one falls into the trap and even becomes a notorious love getter. Having unprotected intimacy increases the triple threat of HIV and AIDS. It continues as a series of cycles. An example when a student claims to have a list of those comrades they have been together.
There are also some students depending on older people for money in exchange of sex to ‘suspect’ that their parents cannot provide for them. For the sake of huge pockets this is becoming enormous and to say at the same time they have either student boyfriend or girlfriend. All is done in secrecy but nowadays they have started normalizing it. During weekends they are transported to specific towns and returned on a new week.
The cases of students taking life of the other for love are worrying. This can be quoted where some students say that campus is home for cheating and it is normal. Indeed the behaviours exhibited are not normal but strange. This calls for parents and guardians to encourage being near, open and talking to their sons and daughters to understand what they are undergoing such as depression and other issues involving love.
Most of these are setbacks that need to be countered crucially for the breakthrough of this younger future generation from all these odds. These relationships cannot be recognized fully as bad but the way students are approaching them is threatening. Advice, close awareness, being open to them about love relationships and sensitizing them can impact them positively in their lives.
