Thousands of farmers from different parts of the mountain region were recently trained on modern technics.
Different organizations took part in the training that took place in Mwea area, Kirinyaga County.
Agitech, an independent seedlings company, was among the different firms that conducted a grand agricultural expo in Mutithi area, aiming to equip farmers with knowledge on how to deal with current challenges and empower them with new ideas on farming.
“Farmers have a chance to learn and look at farming in a different way. Through Agitech, farmers will learn how to use different fertilisers for different crops and also have different varieties to choose from,” explained William Ngeno, Yara Company Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
The expo, in partnership with Yara Company, aimed to teach farmers how to use different fertilisers for different crops and have different varieties to choose from. Live demonstrations of the Farmcare Platform, a digital farming mobile accessible application, were among the major attractions.
“The Agitech Centre serves one of Yara’s knowledge centres, where farmers learn practically about sustainable water management, improving soil health, and any other farming techniques based on the challenges they face. The centre also affords them the chance to experiment with crop rotation techniques, check on the balance between fertiliser input and expected yields, and assess what they can take back to their farms to increase both their yields and their income,” Ngeno said.
The expo also offers live demonstrations of the Farmcare Platform, which offers easily understood crop cycles, weather forecasts, and a fertiliser calculator. Agitec Expo 2024 aims to provide farmers with solutions to their woes, such as sustainable water management, improving soil health, and experimenting with crop rotation techniques.
Farmers like James Mwaniki, a maize farmer from Embu, praised the expo for exposure to best farming practices and called on the government to conduct more agricultural trainings regularly to maximise productivity in their farms.
Dr. Matthew Mwangi of Kerugoya Fortis Medical and Cancer Centre urged farmers to attend agricultural trainings to learn from agrochemical manufacturers and trainers on basic knowledge on handling agrochemicals and fertilisers.
