Three individuals, including a police officer, have been charged in a Nakuru court with forging birth registration documents in an alleged attempt to defraud former Rongai Member of Parliament, Mrs Alicen Chelaite.
Eva Jelangat, Edwin Ronoh, a police officer, and Jacob Kiprotich face 11 counts, including conspiracy to defraud, obtaining registration by false pretenses, forgery, and providing false information to a public officer.
According to the prosecution, on or about November 27, 2023, in Nakuru township, the accused—along with others not before the court—allegedly presented birth certificates to the Nakuru law courts, falsely claiming these documents were legitimately obtained and issued to them by the Department of Civil Registration Services.
The three defendants are also accused of submitting forged documents and initiating a legal application against former MP Chelaite, despite being aware that the signatures were falsified.
Furthermore, Jelangat faces an additional charge of falsely procuring a birth certificate by claiming Chelaite as her mother. Ronoh faces a similar charge.
The charge sheet further alleges that on June 2, 2010, in Nakuru township, Ronoh willfully procured a birth certificate under the pretense that Chelaite was his mother and Elijah Kiplagat Kipkemoi Chelaite his father, while knowing that his biological parents, who are still alive, had no connection to the Chelaite family.
Appearing before Nakuru Chief Magistrate Bildad Ochieng, all three defendants entered pleas of not guilty to the charges.
The court granted bail, releasing each defendant on a bond of KSh 200,000, with a surety of a similar amount.
The matter is scheduled for mention on November 13, 2024.
