Local unity is a prerequisite for nationalism, the Kikuyu Community patron has advised.
The patron, Dr Thuo Mathenge has urged the residents of Mt Kenya to have unity of purpose and avoid political pitfalls that may hamper both regional and national development.
Dr Mathenge who was addressing mourners during the funeral of political activist Julius Gaita Karimi at Kiricho village in Nyeri Town constituency said that decades’ effort could easily be destroyed in a few days when and if citizens deviate from issues that unite them and dwell on divisive non issues like which region deserves more development than the other.
His sentiments were echoed by George Mwangi alias Mwangi Box who is Chief Officer for Trade at the Nyeri County government.
Dr Mathenge who is the chairman of Kenya Agricultural and Research Organisation (KALRO) and industritalist said the most populous community will live to regret if they failed to adhere to the call for unity.
Dr Mathenge noted that the region may not be held in high esteem if they don’t talk in one voice by other regions and called on leaders from all cadres to speak in one voice and demand thejr rightful share of development.
On his part, MwangiBox who is said to be aspiring for the Nyeri Town constituency parliamentary seat said unity was the unifying factor for development of any society.
The duo eulogised the deceased as people’s person who would go to any length to ensure that the community would get the best without regard to whether he would personally benefit.
Dr Mathenge, who prides himself as one of the largest employer in the county noted that unity is a prerequisite to tranquility and sustainable development.
The region has been at crossroads since the impeachment of the duly elected deputy president Rigathi Gachagua who is contesting his ouster at the High Court with the matter coming up for hearing later this month before a three judge bench.
Sitting members of parliament from the region have been having a hard time getting to the grassroots where the electorate has been more than furious and not ready to recieve them.
Matters have not been made any better by the recurrence of the proscribed Mungiki whose leader Maina Njenga convened a meeting of the sect members at Kabiruini showground on December 31 vowing to provide security to the incumbent legislators much to the chagrin of the residents.
As matters stand legislators from the county may have a hard time convincing the electorate to reelect them as they are already being viewed as traitors and self seekers.
The combative area Member of Parliament was neither present nor represented in the ceremony though the deceased was an acclaimed grassroots mobiliser who played a key role in the agitation for multiparty and a key pillar of the late Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai’s Greenbelt movement in the county.
Mourners eulogised Gaita as a reliable advocate of local networks who played a key role in advancement of local development in education, social and religious aspects.
