Universities’ lobby group accuse HELB of discriminating Law students

The Kenya University Students Organization (KUSO) has accused Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) of discriminating Law students undertaking Diploma courses in issuance of loans.
Through the group’s new President Saruni Jesse, the lobby called on HELB to treat all the students equally saying discriminating some was unconstitutional.
“We call upon the government to take measures to ensure that HELB serves all students equally and does not discriminate against diploma students,” he said adding that to address the issue, Law students in all universities were planning to form an association to lobby for their interests

The President made the remarks during a round table meeting with student leaders from universities offering Law in Kenya. The meeting was held at View Coffee Hse, Nairobi.
They also discussed the plight of Diana Chepkemoi a fourth year student from Meru University who is currently held hostage in Saudi Arabia, a place she went to seek for employment so as to raise money to clear her school fees.
Saruni called upon the government to intervene to ensure that Chepkemoi returns to Kenya safely.
Last month, KUSO got a new leadership where Saruni was elected President.
The powerful Students’ has since July 18 embarked addressing various issues that have been affecting the students across the country.
Saruni, an International Relations student at University of Nairobi and a former president MKU Law Campus says he will transform the lobby into a serious association championing the interests of students.
Saruni’s team office organisation under backdrop of mushrooming Students lobby groups which has seen Kuso loose its clout.
The new leadership has noted with concern that Kuso had been reduced to a briefcase outfit by some former students leaders who have been clinging on the leadership for over eight years and doing nothing for the welfare of the students.
Those who are working with Saruni in revamping the organisation include Cooperative University student leader, Collins Brandon who is the new Secretary General, Kenya Methodist University’s
Steve Munene as Deputy Secretary General, Mombasa Campus Mt Kenya University Students leader Raudha Mohamed as the Vice Chairman and Judy Oyoo of Kiriri Women University as the Treasurer.
One of the new team’s mandate is to ensure that Kuso is taken back to its students, review its constitution and safeguard its from being personalised by selfish leaders.
