Barbara Marie Minney’s life is a testament to the power of self-discovery and the courage to live authentically. As a Christian transgender woman, award-winning poet, writer, speaker, teaching artist, and quiet activist, Barbara has spent her life navigating the complexities of identity, creativity, and advocacy.

 A Life of Purpose

Born on October 7, 1953, in Parkersburg, West Virginia, Barbara grew up with a passion for the arts and a drive to succeed. She excelled in school, becoming a talented musician and athlete, and later pursued a career in law. After graduating cum laude from the University of Dayton School of Law, Barbara practiced law for 36 years, co-authoring books on special education and sports law. 

Finding Her Voice

After retiring from law, Barbara discovered her true calling as a writer. She began to explore her creativity, writing poetry that reflected her experiences, emotions, and passions. Her poetry collections, including “If There’s No Heaven” and “A Woman in Progress,” have received critical acclaim, winning awards and being nominated for prestigious honors.

Reclaiming Heritage

Through her writing, Barbara seeks to reclaim her Appalachian heritage and claim her space as a queer Appalachian. Her poetry and essays have been widely published, and she has performed her work extensively, including her multimedia performance piece “Queer in the Holler: An Appalachian Journey of Perseverance.”

 Advocacy and Community

Barbara is dedicated to advocacy and community engagement. She has served on the boards of Literary Youngstown and the AIDS Network/Akron Pride Initiative and has taught workshops for various organizations. Her commitment to empowering others is evident in her work, inspiring countless individuals to find their voice and live authentically.

A Life of Love

Barbara’s life is also marked by love and devotion. She has been married to her wife, Marilyn, for over 43 years, and their relationship is a testament to the power of love and commitment. Together, they have navigated the challenges of Barbara’s transition, and their bond has grown stronger.

Legacy and Impact

Barbara’s legacy extends beyond her writing. She has created a community of supporters and advocates, inspiring others to live authentically and find their voice. Through her work, Barbara continues to break down barriers and challenge societal norms, leaving a lasting impact on those who know her and her work.
