I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the alarming situation unfolding in Mt. Elgon Forest. It is distressing to witness the continued human encroachment and destruction of this vital ecosystem while the Kenyan government remains silent.
Mt. Elgon Forest is not just a collection of trees; it is a critical part of Kenya’s natural heritage, providing essential ecosystem services such as water regulation, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity conservation. The forest is not only home to numerous plant and animal species but also serves as a source of livelihood for local communities.
However, recent reports of human demolitions within Mt. Elgon Forest paint a grim picture of environmental degradation and habitat loss. Illegal logging, encroachment for agricultural purposes, and other destructive activities are ravaging this precious ecosystem, putting its delicate balance at risk.
Despite the clear and present danger to Mt. Elgon Forest, the government’s inaction is both puzzling and concerning. It is imperative that the relevant authorities take immediate and decisive action to halt further destruction and safeguard the future of this invaluable natural resource.
I urge the Kenyan government to enforce existing laws and regulations to prevent illegal logging and land encroachment in Mt. Elgon Forest, increase patrols and surveillance to monitor and deter illegal activities within the forest, and collaborate with local communities, conservation organizations, and other stakeholders to develop sustainable management plans for Mt. Elgon Forest that prioritize conservation and community well-being.
Time is of the essence, and decisive action is needed to save Mt. Elgon Forest from irreversible damage. Failure to act now will have far-reaching consequences for the environment, biodiversity, and future.
