- The CEC agriculture Wilfred Longuronyang said the county is promoting agricultural technology to increase productivity in all aspects including livestock rearing and crop farming.
- “We decided as a county to promote our economy, through making known the technologies to our people to promote agricultural activities and also livestock rearing. Through this, we are sure to fight food insecurities in our region and also have income for people.” He explained.
The residents of West Pokot county have been urged to adopt agricultural farming to complement their animals products. According to agricultural experts, 35% of the region can produce food for the county
Speaking during Kishaunet Agricultural Show in West Pokot, the deputy governor Robert Komole said, they are encouraging the community to adopt the planting of short seasoned crops like vegetables and maize.
“We always plant long seasoned crops that are drought resistant, we are urging our people to start planting perennial crops which are short seasoned.” Hon Robert Komole said.
“I’m impressed about this, crops like Sukuma wiki grow very fast, and it will help us have food and money at the same time.” Kennedy Kipkeiyo a resident said.

According to Chief officer department of agriculture in the county Ms. Naomi Lemreng, incorporating technology in agriculture will increase productivity among the farmers in the county.
” We encourage our people to learn new things that are within and offered in our department for example free vertinary services, best breeds to reared in our region for their efforts to be worth the investment.” Ms. Naomi explained.
The DG Robert Komole further urged farmers to make use of the trained agricultural officers and embrace new technologies in the society for increased productivity.
” Our farmers should heed to trainings and make use of our agricultural officers who have been trained to offer their services and assistance to their farms. We also encourage farmers to shun the traditional farming methods, let us all embrace technology that has been advanced to the agricultural sector.’ the DG urged.
Recently, the department of agriculture has been looking into ways to boost agriculture in the county through agricultural trainings and extension services to farmers to improve and increase food production.
“We are foreseeing in 2 years through the boost on free and subsidized fertilizers by the government, the region will also witness an improvement in food production, and also as a department, we are encouraging our farmers to attend and benefit from the agricultural trainings by the ministry.” Chief officer department of agriculture Ms. Naomi Lemreng stated.
During his State of the nation address, president William Ruto said his government is committed to end hunger in the country through subsidized fertilizer distributed at reduced price country wide from Kshs. 6500 to Kshs 2500.
“I am committed to put the shame of hunger behind us once and for all. We rolled out a countrywide farmer registration and fertiliser subsidy programme that has made available 5.5 million bags to farmers across Kenya. We have progressively reduced the cost of fertiliser from KSh6,500 to KSh2,500, increased maize acreage under production by an extra 200,000 acres and enhanced maize production by an additional 18 million bags.” President William Ruto said.
The 3- day Kishaunet Agricultural Show concludes on Saturday 11th, farmers from neighbouring counties are also showcasing their agricultural prowess, urged by agricultural experts for the residents of West Pokot to adopt.
