Former King of Macedonia Alexander the Great said that an army of sheep led by a lion is better than an army of lions led by a sheep in an emphasis of how bravery in leadership is important. The moral influence of the subjects is significantly determined by the attitude of their boss. When the latter is wise enough the system usually works in favour of everyone else.
Alexander placed the highest responsibility to the leader but this does not mean the rest of members do not have a role to play. They are expected to take command from their boss seriously. For them to be said to be in an army they are required to be well organized and ready for a fight if need arises.
Among the ants female ant’s fate to become a worker or queen is mainly determined by diet, not genetics making the queen to be slightly bigger in size compared to the other ants. Any female ant larva can become the queen those that do receive diets richer in protein. The other larvae receive less protein, which causes them to develop as workers. Once this have happened she spends most of her time inside the nest laying eggs only to come out during the mating season and prowl for a mate. She will be the mother of all ants in a colony.
If it happens that an ant kills the queen the rest of the ants do not migrate to another colony that their queen is no longer alive rather they continue supplying resources to the settlement until they die of old age or external causes eventually the colony dies unless it was an exceptional one where there were multiple queens at the same time.
In case of an ant the leadership is upon the queen her presence or absence is the one that determines longevity or extinction of the colony.
