During the International Women Day celebrations on March 8, women openly expressed on how despite being ignored in social positions they have managed to occupy significant areas in the society.
President Ruto while giving his speech for the Day, he confirmed writing a letter to the National Assembly for the implementation of the Two Third Gender requirement to enhance women inclusivity in representation and leadership. Additionally, the president stated that he has nominated 10 women ambassadors and 6 deputy ambassadors. Showing the determination of the government in empowering women.
It should not look as a competition between men and women, but women have emphasized on a phrase mostly used that, ‘what a man can do a woman can do it better’. As a result in 2017, three women won gubernatorial seats which increased to seven in the 2022 general election, increase from 23 to 29 women MPs in the two elections respectfully. This reconfirms the capability of women involving themselves in leadership matters.
The Chief Justice Martha Koome overpowered men with her eligibility to be selected and lead the most powerful position of the Judiciary which is one of the three arms of government.
Despite some felt unrecognition of women, women are now participants in the known producing fields like academia and science. They are PhD holders, teaching in universities and also women involvement in critical decision making boardrooms of up to international organizations.
This has made women be part and parcel of development sectors of the society. Women journalists were not left behind in observing the significance of the Women’s Day. Cyberbullying mentioned as one of the concern directed to women journalists, also being profiled indicently. These setbacks have not denied them strength to proof their credibility and capabilities.
An outcry has been amplified by both men and women in the curbing of the humiliations that women go through, some subjected to FGM and unusual deaths such as cases recently experienced in the Airbnb. The government has been urged to stop banditry which innocent women are prone into unsuitable conditions and their families and refugee.
Women being encouraged to share their special knowledge is a breakthrough to a future energetic balanced society. President Ruto recommended that it is better in the future a presidential candidate to have a woman deputy.
