Nyeri County Senator Wahome Mwangi Wamatinga yesterday launched a school feeding programme.
The programme will be run through his Wamatinga Foundation and will see thousands of pupils given free porridge daily as a way of cautioning them from hunger due to the persistent drought.
The Senator visited Kahira-ini primary school (Gatung’ang’a) in Mathira constituency, Nyakinyua Primary school (Majengo) Nyeri Town, Kamatongu Primary school (Mweiga), Kiahuko Primary school-Kiawara Mugunda, both in Kieni constituency.
The initial program will see 7,432 pupils in 30 primary schools across Nyeri county benefit from the program for the reminder of the year.
Many school going children are going to school without food due to the ongoing drought and Economic challenges. Thus, providing a cup of Uji daily we will keep the pupils in school and improve their performance.
“I’m putting more emphasis in Kieni constituency and I will extend the program to cover 47 schools from 20 schools that have benefited today,” the senator said when he visited the schools in the area.
He at the same time, as a way of motivating the pupils sitting for KCPE this term, he promised to include them in the program by providing lunch during the exam period with those who will score 300 marks being promised a reward of 5,000 each.
In yet another promise, the senator said the four schools he visited yesterday will be offered a full board tour to Senate in Nairobi.
He was accompanied by among others, the County Director of Education Mr.Kiretai, Simon Mbogo, MCA Rware ward, Njuguna Kawanjiku, MCA Mweiga ward and Kariithi Wambui who is a nominated MCA.
