Kenya’s president joins African leaders at the Kremlin as Russia deepens its continental push ahead of a defining election year at home
By Jane Njoki
President William Ruto yesterday attended a gala reception hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow, on the sidelines of the Third Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum, as African leaders collectively signalled a willingness to diversify their global partnerships beyond traditional Western alliances.
The forum, bringing together heads of state and senior officials from across the continent, reflects a broader and accelerating shift in Africa’s diplomatic posture β one in which Moscow has invested considerable political and economic capital. For Ruto, the Moscow visit carries weight beyond ceremony. With Kenya’s August 2027 general election drawing closer, his presence on the world stage alongside other African leaders reinforces a carefully constructed narrative: that his administration is actively pursuing prosperity for Kenya from every available direction, on terms of sovereign equality rather than dependency.
The reception at the Grand Kremlin Palace, one of Russia’s most symbolically charged venues, was designed to project partnership at the highest level. Whether that partnership translates into the factories, jobs and investments that Kenyan voters will demand an accounting of next August remains the harder and more consequential question.
Diplomacy opens doors. Elections are won at home.
