Nyeri County gubernatorial candidate Dr Thuo Mathenge yesterday petitioned the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to act over falseful alarming messages negatively targeting him.
Dr Mathenge presented a complaint letter to the county Returning Officer Ms Anastasia Nduku which detailed his petition.
In the letter, the candidate who is vying on The New Democrats (TND) party noted that some bloggers allied to the current governor Mwalimu Mutahi Kahiga had hacked and created a system where they were sending unsolicited messages to voters in the county stating that he had joined the Azimio La Kenya Moja coalition and that he would team up with the coalition gubernatorial candidate Ephraim Maina Kirinyaga.
On her part, the Returning Officer assured Dr Mathenge that the commission will act on the petition.
Some of the action to be taken, Ms Nduku revealed, will be to involve the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) whose officers will be expected to investigate and take action against those culpable.
Addressing the media and his supporters after presenting the petition at the IEBC offices in Nyeri town, Dr Mathenge named county government media officer Joseph Wambugu, another staff Nelson and blogger allied to the current governor James Muringo as the suspects behind the messaging issue.
Further, the candidate claimed that governor Kahiga was using county coffers running into millions of shillings to discredit his competitors.
He called on those competing for various political seats to carry out mature campaigns and avoid mudslinging.
As part of mudslinging, Dr Mathenge claimed that he had received reports that some politicians were giving out flour laced with unconsumable things.
Later, he made a campaign tour in Nyeri town and its environs where he articulated his vision for the county.
