It was a rebirth of Volleyball in Nyeri County.
The county Volleyball Association, under the leadership of Mr Jacob Munene organised a successful two-day mega event in Nyeri town.
The event, held at the Dedan Kimathi Kamukunji grounds saw over 40 teams, from within and outside the host county.
Mr Munene’s team, with support of the county’s Department of Gender, Youth, Sports, and Social Services and other partners successful hosted the teams whose culmination was award on prizes last evening.
About 60 teams participated in the event where over 20 teams were drawn from the host county.
Speaking at the tournament venue yesterday, area Governor Mwalimu Mutahi Kahiga noted that the event had reignited the passion for volleyball among various categories of Senior Men, Self-Supporting men, Women under the theme ‘Bringing Back the Glory of Volleyball in Nyeri.’
Other counties that participated in the event included Nairobi, Meru, Nyandarua, Kirinyaga, Nairobi, Meru, Murang’a, Nakuru, Laikipia, among others.
The Association chairman said the event promoted sports as a viable career option and tap talents.
The team comprised professional players from either gender, an issue that highlighted the growing interest in volleyball.
The governor further noted that the event also boosted business in the county headquarters, mostly in the hospitality industry.
“I wish to thank the teams for making the tournament a memorable experience. We are planning for another major and bigger event in October at the same venue,” the governor revealed.
The winners took home cash prizes with the champions taking home KSh50,000, first runners-up, KSh30,000 with the second runners-up receiving KSh20,000.
Some of the winning teams were; Chema Steel from Juja, Kiambu, The Beast from Nairobi, NYEWASCO, Young Spikers from Nyandarua and Flush Queens Spickers
Others were; Moi Air Base,
Equity Bank and AP Kenya.
Among the leaders who accompanied the governor were his Sports CECM Esther Ndung’u, Sports Chief Officer Joe Gethi, Governor’s Office Chief Office Lucy Kiogora, acting Director Sports Monica Thumbi, Aguthi – Gaaki MCA Stanley Wakibia, his Iriaini-Othaya counterpart Wilfred Wambari, their Nlnominated counterpart Fidelis Kanene, Kenya Volleyball Federation National Secretary Ismael
Chege and John Munyiri from Media Council of Kenya among others.
