President William Ruto, his Deputy Kithure Kindiki, Cabinet Secretaries, among other senior leaders yesterday joined hands at the launch of Nairobi Rivers Engineering works at Kamukunji Grounds in Nairobi City County. The project under Climate WorX Initiative poses an urgent significant step towards addressing rivers pollution caused by poor solid waste management, untreated effluent discharge from a malfunctioning sewer system, and riparian encroachment among others. At its implementation, the project will create a 60km sewer line that will enhance Nairobi Rivers ecosystem regeneration with an additional employment of 18,000 employees boosting the government’s transformative agenda. As part of his development tour in Kamukunji, the Head of State launched several projects namely; Shauri Moyo Affordable Housing Project, School Feeding Programme, Upgrading of DESA “Desert” Grounds Pitch and Kamukunji Technical and Vocational Project and inspected the ogoing construction of the 4,566-unit Shauri Moyo B housing project. Several dignitaries attended the launch including Cabinet Secretaries Adan Duale ( Environment), Soipan Tuya (Defense), Alice Wahome (Housing), Principal Secretaries Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno (Environment and Climate Change), Charles Hinga (Housing) Teresia Mbaika (Devolution), Dr. Raymond Omollo (Internal Security and National Administration) Governor Johnson Sakaja, MPs and MCAs.
Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development Mutahi Kagwe yesterday met with UAE Ambassador Dr. Salim Ibrahim Alnaqbi at the UAE Embassy in Nairobi, where they discussed, among other things, ways of strengthening agricultural and trade cooperation between the two countries. Their discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations and building on recent agreements aimed at boosting trade and investment. In January, the two States signed the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which eliminated trade barriers and opened new markets for Kenyan exports, including meat, fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Additionally, a 2023 trade agreement with Dubai expanded investment opportunities, allowing Kenya to diversify its exports while increasing imports of electronics, machinery, and vehicles. An MoU between the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Dubai International Chamber further supports business partnerships through trade missions and investment forums. The meeting reaffirmed both nations’ commitment to translating these agreements into tangible benefits, fostering economic growth, and advancing Kenya’s agricultural sector on the global stage.
The World Bank Task Team concluded its first implementation support mission to Kenya, aimed at kick-starting the Kenya Health Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Resilience (HEPPR) Project under the regional HEPRRP program. The mission included field visits to key agencies such as the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, the National Quality Control Laboratory, and the Kenya Biovax Institute to assess project readiness and compliance with signed agreements. Discussions focused on work plan reviews, procurement processes, and addressing potential implementation challenges.
The visit reaffirms the World Bank’s commitment to strengthening Kenya’s healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, ensuring effective emergency preparedness and resilience.
Memorandum of Understanding between the State Department for Labour and Skills Development and Global Development Incubator Africa to enhance Youth Employability and Economic Growth. Yesterday, Shadrack M. Mwadime, Principal Secretary for Labour and Skills Development, and Alice Gugelev, Chief Executive Officer of Global Development Incubator (GDI-Africa), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This strategic partnership aims to promote the operationalisation of the National Sector Skills Committees, ensuring that these industry-led committees align skills supply with skills demand.
GDI-Africa is a non-profit organization dedicated to driving transformational change across Africa. Their mission is to bring together ideas, leaders, and capital to build and scale the next generation of social solutions. As part of the MoU, GDI-Africa will support the National Sector Skills Committees through resource mobilization, innovation, incubation, and linkages.
Investment, Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary (CS) Lee Kinyanjui has commended Uasin Gishu County for its commitment towards establishing Export Processing Zones (EPZs) and the County Aggregation and Industrial Parks (CAIP). The CS said the government has prioritised 13 CAIPs out of the 18 being constructed across the country, and out of the 13, Uasin Gishu was ranked 4th in its construction progress. The government is also constructing four EPZs in Eldoret (Uasin Gishu County), Muranga, Kirinyaga, and Busia. The CAIPs are jointly constructed by the National and the county governments, with the county government giving Sh250 million and land, while the national government contributes Sh250 million. Speaking in Eldoret during a familiarisation tour of national government projects being implemented by his ministry, Mr. Kinyanjui said Uasin Gishu County has the potential of becoming a major industrial hub for the country and also the East Africa region, considering the available infrastructure already in place, such as the Eldoret International Airport, the road connecting the East Africa region and the railway line, plus the existence of Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) regional offices.
Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) chairman Dr Thuo Mathenge says embracing modern farming technologies, especially by engaging Gen Z, will be a game-changer for Kenya’s food security. Precision farming, smart irrigation, climate-resilient crops, and digital platforms for market access can revolutionize agriculture. Since being appointed to the position, a few months ago, Dr Mathenge has been working out on rejuvenating Kalro in a bid take sure that it is in the forefront in promoting various innovations; from drought-resistant seeds to AI-driven farming solutions. He says he is working on the initiative of scaling adoption and convincing the young generation to embrace commercial farming and adopting it as a form of earning decent income.
