The Nairobi Hospital hosted the  Magical Kenya Medical Tourism Forum, bringing together key stakeholders from the healthcare, travel, and hospitality industries. The forum, organized by Magical Kenya and the Kenya Tourism Board, provided a platform for discussions for growth opportunities, challenges, and the role of medical professionals, hospitals, and travel partners in enhancing Kenya’s competitiveness in the global medical tourism sector.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Samuel Odede, OGW, Director of Medical Services & Research at The Nairobi Hospital, emphasized Kenya’s potential to attract international patients seeking high-quality healthcare services.

“Kenya is proud of world-class medical facilities, skilled specialists, and advanced healthcare infrastructure. By fostering collaboration between the tourism and healthcare sectors, we can develop a thriving medical tourism industry that not only boosts our economy but also enhances healthcare services for both local and international patients,” he noted.

Additionally Mr. Odede reaffirmed their commitment to advancing medical excellence and providing top-tier healthcare services to international patients.

According to Ken Research, a global market research firm, the global medical tourism market is expected to surpass Sh5.2 trillion ($40 billion) by 2025, driven by factors such as an ageing global population, increasing healthcare disparities, and advancements in medical technology.

The Ministry of Health reports that Kenya attracts an average of 5,000 medical tourists annually, primarily from neighboring countries. While this growth has largely been organic, stakeholders are now seeking to structure and formalize medical tourism efforts for sustainable expansion.

The Kenya Tourism Board outlined its Medical Tourism Strategy, highlighting key focus areas and proposed initiatives to enhance Kenya’s visibility as a trusted healthcare destination, by a panel discussion, moderated by Mr. Muthuri Kinyamu, CEO of Accessible Travel, providing a platform for government officials, medical experts, and industry leaders to share insights and recommendations.

Kenya has been making strides in specialized medical fields such as oncology, cardiology, fertility treatments, and cosmetic surgery, with leading hospitals investing in cutting-edge technology and attracting top-tier medical professionals. The success of the Magical Kenya Medical Tourism Forum is expected to strengthen the country’s position as a regional healthcare hub, boosting both the healthcare and tourism sectors.
