THE 2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PEACE, SECURITY FOR SOCIAL ENTERPRISE WALK
CONCEPT
“Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels” is the 16th sustainable development goal established by the United Nations in 2015. the document strongly emphasizes to the whole world the need to; Reduce violence; protect children from abuse, exploitation, trafficking ,promote the rule of law and ensure equal access to justice; combat organized crime and illicit financial and arms flows.
Achieving this goal has over the decades remained an elusive mirage as evidenced by the rising number of witnessed lethal community conflicts, wars as well as forceful human displacement and total violation of human rights. According to UNHCR 2021 mid-year report the number of inhumanly displaced persons rose from 82.2 million in 2020 to 84.4 million. This shall continue to rise as long as individuals, organized groups or institutions continue to fuel violence with impunity, promote inequality and exclusion from key decisions and in the share of merit goods. Violation of human rights and conflicts leads to serious disruption of public order as clearly articulated in the UNHCR 2021 Mid-year Report. Clashes between different communities or ethnicities over resources such as water and pasture also remain a key challenge that threatened the very core of peace and security. Cultural practices including cattle rustling often results in internal conflicts between communities, which destroys their lives, and livelihoods. As a result, poverty, illiteracy, vulnerability and deprivement becomes a description of their lives.
Election related tensions and violence disrupt social security, peace and economic development. Kenya has in the past-witnessed post-election violence, breakdown of rule of law and economic downturn stemming from highly contested campaigns and disputed election outcomes. Many times this has led to loss of lives, destruction of property, and loss of businesses and disruption of livelihoods for prolonged periods in the country.
Every citizen recognizes the need to have peace and stability at all times. Peace, security and sustainability provides the freedom of movement, generation of income and economic development. It assures social and economic sustainability for all. In the same breathe Peaceful electioneering allows political transitions devoid of roughed social and economic disruptions. It is in view of the above-discussed issues, among others that Mount Kenya University (MKU) and her partners have been compelled to create a platform to enable academia and different sector players converge to discuss peace and security matters for social-economic development. This year’s conference will be held on 18th to 20th May 2022, at Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre, MKU Thika. Prior to the conference, the organisers are persuaded that the message of peace being so critical should be spread to our communities through A PEACE WALK.
