Kenya and the UAE signal a shared ambition to move beyond diplomacy and into concrete investment as 2027 political pressures mount at home

President William Ruto met UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan at State House, Nairobi, yesterday, reaffirming the two countries’ commitment to expanding trade and investment ties.
Ruto described the bilateral relationship as grounded in shared aspirations, signalling an intent to translate diplomatic warmth into measurable economic outcomes. “Kenya and the United Arab Emirates enjoy warm diplomatic ties grounded on our shared aspirations. We will keep growing this friendship to facilitate more trade and investments between our two countries,” the President said.
The meeting comes at a moment when Ruto is working to consolidate Kenya’s standing as East Africa’s premier investment destination, a narrative that carries domestic political weight as the country moves deeper into the pre-election period ahead of August 2027. Economic delivery — jobs, infrastructure and foreign capital — has become central to his re-election argument, and high-profile diplomatic engagements with Gulf states, whose sovereign wealth funds and trading houses represent significant potential investment, form a visible part of that strategy.
The UAE is already one of Kenya’s leading trading partners, with bilateral flows spanning logistics, real estate, financial services and commodities.
