Dairy farmers in Teso South Sub-County decry idle milk cooling machine and milk dispenser due to challenges accessing financing to build modern milk cooling facilities.
In a meeting with a sub- committee of Agriculture and Livestock Committee chaired by Dr. John Mutunga, Members of the Andugosi Dairy Farmers Cooperative led by Chairperson, Mr. Bornface Anduyi, yesterday interacted as part of the Committee’s inspection visit and budget implemantaion oversight.
The Cooperative, founded in 2015 with 65 registered members, plans to increase its membership to 180 by 2024. Currently, there are 1,820 cows in the region, and the cooperative collects 150 liters of milk daily. Their goal is to recruit, train, and economically empower the community through efficient and effective dairy production management value addition chain process.
During the meeting, the Members of the Andugosi Dairy Cooperative highlighted their challenges including limited financial resources to construct offices and a milk plant, limited knowledge capacity, lack of enough feed, and tsetse fly infestation affecting the quantity of milk. They called on the National Government to support them in eradicating the tsetse fly infestation and to allocate more funds to the agriculture sector.

Additionally, farmers in Teso South Sub-County informed the Committee that they had not received the subsidized fertilizer.
While addressing the dairy farmers, Committee chair Dr. John Mutunga called upon fellow parliamentarians to implement the Malabo Declaration of the African Union to invest at least 10% of the total budget to agricultural development.
The Committee on Agriculture and Livestock requested for a detailed report on the budget required to construct a modern cooling plant building to utilize the unused milk cooling machine.
