Chains for exercising constitutional rights: Bhekimpilo Mbedzi’s ordeal raises alarm

The reported treatment of Bhekimpilo Mbedzi while in custody raises deeply troubling human rights concerns that demand the attention of every Zimbabwean.
According to information available to The Mt Kenya Times, Mbedzi appeared in court heavily restrained, with chains linking his hands and legs. Reports further allege that he has been kept in these restraints continuously while in custody. If accurate, these allegations demand an urgent and independent investigation.
It is also alleged that Mbedzi has developed severely swollen legs, making it difficult for him to walk or enter the dock in court. The sight of any citizen struggling in such a condition is profoundly disturbing. Every detainee, regardless of the allegations they face or their political affiliation, is entitled to humane treatment, dignity and the protection of their fundamental rights.
No Zimbabwean should be treated as a dangerous criminal simply for exercising constitutional rights. The Constitution of Zimbabwe guarantees freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly. The exercise of those rights should never result in treatment that may amount to cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment.
Zimbabweans must continue to raise their voices — peacefully and lawfully — against any form of human rights abuse. The responsible authorities are called upon to ensure that all detainees are treated in accordance with the Constitution and international human rights standards, and that any allegations of abuse are investigated transparently and impartially.
History will judge not only those who violate human rights, but also those who remain silent in the face of injustice. The defence of justice, dignity and the rule of law must be a cause every Zimbabwean is willing to stand for.
