Teacher Evans Asikoyo, the poet

What is climate, but the breath

Of earth’s great body, life and death—

The long, slow dance of wind and sun,

The skies, the seas, as seasons run.

From deserts dry to forests green,

It shapes the world, both seen, unseen.

Wonderful!

Yet now we feel its pulse off beat,

The cold that burns, the summer heat.

A shifting tide, a storm unplanned,

A world transformed by human hand.

Regrettable!

What causes this? We know too well—

The smoke, the fire, the fossil’s spell.

We dig, we burn, we cut too deep,

And wake the earth from ancient sleep.

The gases rise, they trap the heat,

The glaciers melt beneath our feet.

Regrettable!

But remedies, though faint, remain—

In every choice, we break the chain.

We turn to winds, to sun, to trees,

Restore the balance, calm the seas.

We walk with care, we plant, we grow,

We change the path, we learn to slow.

Hopeful!

For in the soil, the air, the sea,

Is all we need to set us free.

If we instead listen, heed the call—

We heal the earth, we save us all.
