1). Who are you, full name, stage name, a brief introduction about yourself. Where you come from, village, country.
I am Erika Pezzella from Lusaka Zambia. I live in the USA where I have my own business in the real estate industry, and I also model for various shows. I recently took part in the Mrs. Globe pageant that took place in China where I was nominated Mrs. Italy Globe 2019
2). What’s your contribution to Literature in Africa?
I have written a children’s book which will be launched in multiple countries in Africa including Zambia, D.R.Congo, Kenya and Tanzania. I hope this book will bring out the love for literature and inspire other writers and people who are thinking of writing to do so.
3)Your challenges.
One of my greatest challenges is having support from the people whom i would expect the most support from. I believe in supporting one another because the next person’s success could be the path to my success. I find that in Africa it is hard to get the support of those who are closest to you and that mentality needs to change.
4). What you recommend to be done
I would recommend educating people and giving people more opportunities so that they don’t feel stuck in a situation where they do not find joy. More opportunities lead to more success. Sometimes people just don’t see a way for themselves and feel depressed and stressed without knowing it. Also social media has a lot of influence on people. Educating people about not falling for social media “standards” but rather focusing on their lives and being the best that they can be will truly have a life changing effect on their personal development and outlook towards others.
5). Your highlights about your craft.
With my modeling career, i would say there’s been many highlights. Being able to travel the world, meet many people in the industry and be a role model for so many women has been amazing. I hope to continue to uplift and help women around the world and be a positive influence on them.
6). Do you have followers, social media handles, real life following, how are Africans reacting to your craft?
I do have many followers and people who reach out to me for advice. I am also mentoring some aspiring models and teaching girls how to walk and represent themselves. I am also teaching them how to spot scammers and people who are no good for them as this industry has a lot of ill-intentioned people and it is easy to fall prey to them.
7). How can Africans collaborations help in building arts, culture and literature?
By using social media to promote their work and by sharing and supporting one another. By buying local goods and keeping in touch with the rest of the world. Also, for Africans who are outside of Africa, let us promote Africa by sharing and giving opportunities to African people.
8). Who is your mentor, people whom you look up to ?
My mentor is every woman out there that does her best to make it. I see so much good in every fighter, who, despite the challenges, pushes through and makes it happen for herself.
One person I’ve always look up to is Sokari Douglas Camp. She has a successful career worldwide in sculpting and made herself known for her artworks. In a World that doesn’t necessarily favor black women sculptors, she has managed to make a name for herself.
9)What can you say to encourage an upcoming writer, publisher or editor anyone wishing to venture into your area of specialization?
I would encourage them to never give up, don’t be discouraged because you are different or have a different look because that very same difference is what will make you successful in your own way. keep pushing and even when you feel like no one’s supporting you, you may have people on the other end of the globe clapping for you. Always persevere.
