A caucus of former freedom fighters and their descendants yesterday condemned violence being withessed in various parts of the country.
Officials and members of MMV Associates CLG termed the continued tolerance of political goons as breeding grounds of making the country uncontrollable and a road map to Haiti-like state.
Led by the caucus Director General James Njuguna Mahuria and chief Executive Officer Emmah Cherotich Kasis, the team called on the Kenyans, particularly the youth to shun violence and being enrolled to carry out activities that are detrimental to the well-being of their fellow citizens.
Speaking during a press briefing after their meeting at Blue Post hotel in Thika, Mahuria singled out the violence witnessed over the weekend in Nyandarua, Kakamega and Kisumu counties as signs of bad things to come.
He said Kenyans should embrace tolerance and divergent political views saying if the trend of hiring goons continues, Kenyans will be one of the unsafest countries in the world.
“We cannot allow some people to control the country through illegal means like hiring goons to attack their opponents. This must be condemned by all,” he said, adding, “When Kenyans went to the forest to fight for independence, a lot of blood was shed, we don’t want anymore blood being shed for no reason”.
He also hit out at a group of western residents who over the weekend attacked Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula by singing traditional initiation songs to him and other leaders.
The move, he said, is a taboo that require cleansing adding that he was saddened by the fact that it was done due to political reasons.
Leaders, he said must be respected at all times, and asked those not satisfied with their qualities to pass their verdict during the General Election.
He claimed that violence in Nyandarua was for people being haunted by what former Nyandarua North MP JM Kariuki stood for.
On her part, Ms Kasis urged leaders, from all political divides to embrace dialogue and shun violence saying if the current trend is not contained, the country risked going the Rwandan way where citizens killed each other in their thousands.
MMV Associates CLG members; Damaris Waithera, Michael Gituku and Munene Nderitu who spoke on behalf of their colleagues echoed their leaders sentiments.
They said most Kenyans were worried that the country was, headed to the wrong direction and urged leaders to control the situation.
They urged the youth not to allow politicians to misuse them for their selfish gains.
