Nyeri County Mutahi Kahiga yesterday presided over the Innovation Awards for TVET graduates ceremony and certificates awards for employability soft skills training.
During the events held at the County headquarters under the theme ‘Improving Employability Skills for TVET Graduates’, Kahiga observed that TVET institutions play a critical role in churning out hands-on skills that are needed in all sub sectors of the economy and as such, they are the key drivers for social economic transformation.
He noted that employability skills have been proved excellent in developing youth to become productive citizens as those skills are critical to the youth as they enter the workforce or start their own businesses.
He thanked Help Self Help Centre through the Embassy of Finland for the employability Soft Skills training to 250 graduates throughout the Nyeri’s 39 Vocational Training Centres on the areas of critical and creative thinking, communication, problem solving, leadership skills, resume writing and job search among others.
The Governor emphasized that the initiative played an integral part in equipping Nyeri youth with the much needed employability skills as well as encouraged the innovativeness of TVET students and graduates through the competitive call for innovation.
He also congratulated the 20 innovators who showcased their talents emphasizing on the need for people to keep abreast and adopt technical innovations that improve efficiency, in order to remain competitive in the global markets.
The innovation award ceremony provided opportunities for TVET institutions students and graduates to showcase their innovation out of which six best were awarded cash awards.
The winners were James Njuguna of Mathenge TTI, Adrian Baaru and Isaack Miano of Mung’aria VTC, Raphael Mwai of Karundu VTC, Simon Rukwaro and Mourice Ndung’u of Nyeri National Polytechnic.
The County Government of Nyeri has formulated and implemented policies in various sectors in support of youth empowerment including: Ensuring that 30% of government procurement is set aside for Youth, Women and PWD, Annual internship programme which has benefitted over 800 youths and The ward specific youth empowerment programmes, geared towards empowering youth, women and PWD groups with business development merchandise as a source of earning their livelihoods
Other initiatives are; Public-private partnerships which have resulted to vital programmes that have benefitted Nyeri youth including Kuza Kazi in collaboration with CocaCola Limited, USAID on Kenya Youth Employment and Skills and support of Nyeri youth with businesses, the County Government provides them with the Enterprise Development Fund, loan which is payable in flexible timelines and with an interest rates of only 5%.
Among the leaders who witnessed the event were present MCAs and several senior County Government officials.
