Artisanal miners from Kwale and Kilifi counties have been appointed as official members of the Artisanal Miners Committees (AMCs) by Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi.
The AMCs assist Mine directors in granting or revoking mining permits for artisans in the country.
The department expects the committee to expedite the process of issuing mining permits to marketing cooperatives.
The country has at least 1 million artisanal miners, highlighting the need to streamline this lucrative sector.
Mwangi urged miners to collect their over 300 trading and dealership licenses and to follow up on applications received.
The Ministry has established a mineral testing laboratory at the Mombasa port to speed up testing and authentication processes.
A team from the Ministry visited Base Titanium in Kwale County to address post-mine abuse cases and prepare the community for mining operations.
Deputy County Commissioner Ronald Mwiwawi praised the commissioning of the AMCs, stating that it will help thousands of youth gain meaningful livelihoods as artisans in the lucrative mining sector.
