One might think that 25 percent was certainly the limit. But it was at this point that heart giving took over — “grace giving” or nonrequired offerings. There were firstfruits offerings in which an Israelite, out of love for God, brought the firstfruits of his crop or livestock to God (Numbers 18:11-13). The beautiful thing about this was that he did so when he had not yet harvested the rest of the crop and did not know what he would ultimately reap. He gave the best to God, trusting He would bring in the rest. It was faith giving and was totally voluntary.
There were also freewill offerings, offerings God called for when He commanded Moses to build the Tabernacle: “Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to receive the offering for me from each man whose heart prompts him to give” (Exodus 25:1, 2). Nothing was specified except that it be voluntary and from the heart. Here the people’s response was so great that Moses had to tell them to stop giving (Exodus 36:2-7). Giving from a heart overflowing with God’s grace, whether the giving be mandatory or voluntary, has always been the ideal for God’s people — before and after the coming of Christ. When a heart overflows in grace giving, a substantial amount of one’s income goes to God.
To be honest, it us not easy, especially with the harsh economic times! But we should know that all we have belongs to God, we are only stewards. Yes, we have basic needs which we should have, and God is every bit concerned about our best welfare, as He states in the scriptures we are His most valuable creation and He, our JEHOVAH. What is the secret then to this? Let’s pray without ceasing, and ask our goid Lord to enable us in Jesus Christ name: AMEN.
SHALOM.
