Residents of Kimugandura village in Laikipia County have called on the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate circumstances under which a teenager was shot dead during a confrontation with herders.
The residents claim the 17-year-old Apiti Lekartua was fatally shot by the law enforcers as they drove a herd of cattle to a local police post after they found them grazing illegally on a private ranch.
The community spokesman Saituk Kaparo said there were no armed bandits but only herders who were grazing livestock in the ranch.
Kaparo questioned how unarmed teenager could be of threat to six police officers abd called on those who did this to face the law.
Leseneiya Legei said that tbey were only looking for pasture for their animals a d the government should not continue harrassinf them more while their animals are at the verge of death due to drought.
At the crest farm he said it is the only place with water which they are sharing with the animals.
Residents said the boy was shot on the waist as he was running away from the law enforcers and are now calling for a post mortem to establish how the young man met his death.
The officers also killed four cows and residents want thorough investigations and any officer found culpable be prosecuted.
Amero Kilua said that at Kimugandura they do not have illegal guns and hen e the officers had no right to fire at the young herders who had only grazing canes.
