IEBC Reconstitution: I Hope Kalonzo’s Wing Of Azimio Will Not Contest The Decision Of High Court

The court has finally cleared the way for the reconstitution of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The judge ruled that the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition had failed to prove thier case.
Their prayers did not show any law had been violated.
I hope Kalonzo’s wing of Azimio will not file an appeal to challenge the decision because if they opt to do so this would cause further delay.
President Ruto is a strong believer in the rule of law and constitution.
Therefore, you would not expect him to approve the swearing-in of members of the selection panel.
He has to wait until when all the petitions filed to challenge the reconstitution of IEBC are heard and determined.
Friday’s ruling comes just a few days after I wrote an opinion piece disagreeing strongly with the critics of President William Ruto that he is to blame for the delay to reconstitute the IEBC.

Kalonzo have since been capitalizing on the delay to play his political games. The other day I heard him issuing ultimatum to President Ruto.
We gave the head of state until March this year to reconstitute the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
I want to repeat that if he fails to heed our call, I will personally lead ‘a big demonstration’.
This will leave the President with no option but to accept our demands, he stated.
Soon after Kalonzo issued the threat, I went to the archives and this is what I found.
Kalonzo has never organized a demonstration leave alone leading it.
Having served three successive governments of independent Kenya, at no time did he ever questioned the government of the day.
In a nutshell, he had curved a niche of being a person of unquestionable loyalty and a refined sycophant.
Today, Kalonzo is being cheated that he stands a chance of ‘unseating’ President Ruto in 2027 polls.
This is why he is trying to do unthinkable because it is not possible to teach an old dog new tricks.
As of now, majority of Azimio leaders have ditched him because they know he cannot change.
Apart from being a coward of the highest order, he does not believe in reforms that can better the lives of Kenyans.
At this juncture, allow me to respond to claims made recently by former Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni, a vocal Kalonzo’s mouth-piece.
Kioni alleged that President William Ruto was to blame for delays to reconstitute IEBC.
He also cited the two proposals contained in the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) final report.
One of the proposal seeks to stop the live streaming of presidential election results pronounced by the returning officer. It is worth to recall in the aftermath of 2007 polls, the country witnessed the worst post-election violence. Many believed this violence was triggered by the live streaming of the presidential elections.
The other proposal seeks to enhance the powers of Assumption of Office of President and Transition of Executive Authority.
It is worth noting Kioni was a member of NADCO committee representing Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance. Kalonzo was a co-chair of the committee.
The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal which tackle parties’ disputes had already sorted out this matter in accordance with the provisions of law.
This is by reaffirming the election of National Liberal Party (NLP) candidate to represent Azimio in the 9-member panel. The poll had been conducted by IEBC officials.
Prior to the poll, Kalonzo had stated they will accept the outcome
Notably, President William Ruto had earlier in March 2013 initiated the process of reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC. This was in line with powers conferred on him by 2010 constitution.
However, the principals of Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance, who were still smarting from the lose they had suffered in the just-concluded presidential elections, opposed the move.
They alleged that the 7-member selection panel was skewed in favor of President Ruto.
As a result, the resolving of this issue became of one of their key demands during the Azimio-led demonstrations.
In the streets, this was their chants. We want a commission that reflect the face of Kenya. We are therefore demanding a review of the electoral laws and this ought to be done by an independent body.
President Ruto heeded the call and this paved the way for establishment of a 10-member National Dialogue Committee (NADCO).
Wiper Leader Kalonzo and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwah chaired these talks which were held at the Bomas of Kenya.
Later, the duo presented the final resolutions to the two principals-President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga.
The reconstitution of the IEBC stood out as one of the key resolutions. The report recommended that the panel that had been set up earlier be disbanded and replaced with an expanded panel of 9 members.
The two principals immediately approved the report and agreed to give priority to the resetting of IEBC.
Wiper’s decision to reject minority parties nominee opened a floodgate of petitions. This matter is still dragging in different courts.
If Kalonzo means well for Kenya, one would have expected him to withdraw the petition filed by Wiper Party.
He has however stated he can’t do this. He is waiting for the court to make a determination.
Therefore, it is wrong for Kalonzo to blame President William Ruto for the delay to reconstitute the IEBC commission.
This reeks of hypocrisy and utter dishonest. Kalonzo fashions himself as a born again Christian. A leader of his calibre ought to learn to tell Kenyans the truth. I reiterate he is the root cause of the delay.
