The Principal Secretary for Industry, Dr. Juma Mukhwana, through the Secretary Administration, State Department for Industry, Mr. Karanja Njora, has officially flagged off teams tasked with conducting the much-anticipated Industrial Mapping and Geo-location Exercise in Nairobi County.
Speaking during the flag off ceremony held at the NSSF building in Nairobi, Mr. Njora emphasized the importance of the exercise in understanding the dynamics of Kenya’s industrial landscape.
“This initiative will allow us to obtain accurate and up-to-date information on industrial activities, enabling informed decision-making and targeted support for manufacturers and entrepreneurs,” he said.
He further emphasized that they recognize the importance of industrialization in job creation
“As a country, we recognize the importance of creating jobs , enhancing value addition and positioning Kenya competitively within the East African region, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and beyond. Yet, our ability to design targeted interventions has been hampered by lack of comprehensive data, with only outdated, fragmented or incomplete data,” Njora stated.
This 15-day exercise will involve the systematic collection of data from industries operating across Nairobi County.
“The goal is simple but profound: to build a comprehensive, up-to-date database that provides clear visibility into the size, location, activities, capacity, employment levels, and constraints faced by our industries. The information we gather will support the development of tailored industrial policies, enhance investment promotion and help align government support with the real needs of our manufacturers from micro-industries to large scale industries,” The Secretary Administration explained.
The mapping exercise is a collaborative effort under the Kenya Industry and Entrepreneurship Project (KIEP), in partnership with the Kenya Industrial Estates (KIE) and the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS). It aims to identify and geo-locate industrial enterprises, assess their capacities, and evaluate challenges facing the sector.
“Moreover, this initiative is key to achieving the National Government priorities, including the BETA strategy, Vision 2030 and the AfCFTA implementation frameworks. By understanding our industrial landscape in detail, we can better identify opportunities for cluster development, infrastructure support, industrial upgrading and market access expansion,” Njora continued to say.
Officials say the data gathered will also aid in investment planning and create opportunities for public-private partnerships by highlighting sectoral strengths and gaps across Nairobi and, eventually, other counties.
The teams, equipped with digital mapping tools, will begin immediate deployment across the county, engaging directly with enterprises to gather first-hand information.
