The Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK) has commended the selection panel on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for giving the country a constituted IEBC, under very difficult circumstances.
President William Ruto nominated a new chairperson, Erastus Edung Ethekon, a former Turkana County attorney and six members of the Commission namely Fahima Araphat Abdallah, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, Moses Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit and Ann Nderitu who are now awaiting approval by the National Assembly.
EAK General Secretary Rev. Kepha Nyandega while speaking during a media briefing in Nairobi, urged the National Assembly to reconvene soon to complete the process in view of the urgency of the Commission.
He said the Alliance shall work closely with the Commission and support them where we can to deliver on their mandate.
“We will continue to play our role of being a voice of reason and standing in the gap for Kenyans and facilitating dialogues with government and various actors in the county” he said.
He called on all Kenyans not to be discouraged or to give in to despondence or actions that may actually worsen our situation.
“We know that there are many challenges our country is faced with but we call on you all to unite, in hope to restore our country. Remain in prayer and stand for what is right and just,” he said.
“We stand on the word of God as outlined in 1 Peter chapter 1 verves 3. ‘Praise be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” he added.
Meanwhile, Rev Nyandega raised concerns about the increasing cases of extrajudicial killings by security agencies in many parts of the country. He also said that they are concerned by the increasing cases of land and resource-related conflicts and insecurity rocking parts of the country.
He said recent studies conducted by EAK associates and partners show that boundary issues pose a great conflict risk ahead of 2027 elections among other issues.
“We will continue to play our role of facilitating conflict prevention and mitigation through dialogue and mediation across the country,” he said.
He said that as Parliament works with the Executive to finalize the preparation of the 2025-2026 Budget and Finance Bill 225 to enact revenue-raising measures, EAK is concerned about the issue of the ballooning and unsustainable public debt.
“We believe that the fiscal crisis the country is in is only going to worsen if the issues of debt, increasing cost of living and lack of real growth with jobs are not addressed.” He said, urging the people to be agents of hope for the good of the country.
He observed that taxation in the country is driving businesses to closure and the unemployment crisis is worsening daily.
He called the President to consult with various stakeholders, including the Church and convene a National Restoration Convention where important matters and challenges facing the people would be addressed.
